Sheetrock is a brand of drywall made by USG. Drywall is the broader product category. If someone says they’re patching your drywall with Sheetrock, those terms can describe the same repair.
The useful comparison is between specific panels. A standard wall panel, a fire-rated panel, and a panel approved for a wet-area system aren’t interchangeable just because they all look like gypsum board.
What the names tell you
| Name on a quote | What it tells you | What still needs to be specified |
|---|---|---|
| Drywall or gypsum board | The general material | Brand, product, thickness, and intended use |
| Sheetrock | A USG brand | The particular Sheetrock product |
| Type X | A fire-resistant panel classification | The tested assembly and installation requirements |
| Moisture-resistant board | A product intended for specified moisture conditions | Whether the product is approved for your location and finish system |
For example, USG sells Sheetrock Brand UltraLight Panels for interior walls and ceilings. That product name is far more specific than “premium drywall.”
A brand can make several kinds of board. Comparing a basic panel from one brand with a specialty panel from another tells you little about the brands as a whole.
Match the repair to the wall
Before buying a patch, identify the existing thickness and the wall’s purpose. A patch that’s thinner than the surrounding board leaves a recess. One that’s thicker creates a raised edge that takes more finishing to blend.
A garage separation, shared wall, or other rated assembly needs more care than an ordinary room partition. Ask the repairer how the specified assembly will be maintained. The panel alone doesn’t establish the rating.
USG’s fire-resistant assemblies guide describes complete systems. Framing, fasteners, board layers, and joints are part of that specification.
Moisture damage changes the job
If the board is soft or stained, replacing it with a different brand won’t address the source of moisture. Deal with the leak and assess the affected area first.
For shower work, choose an approved backing and waterproofing system. Some systems allow drywall beneath a waterproof membrane. That approval belongs to the complete system, not to all drywall in all showers. Our guide to tile over drywall explains that distinction.
The finish may matter more to the visible result
Once the right board is installed, the repair still needs taped joints, suitable compound, and a finish that fits the room. Texture and paint scope can change how noticeable the patch looks.
Our Fort Worth drywall wall repair cost $735 and left the repaired surface ready for paint. The Dallas drywall patch project cost $513.25 and was left unpainted at the customer’s request. Those are completed-job totals, not prices for every patch.
They illustrate a useful question: does your quote end at repaired drywall, primer, spot paint, or repainting the full wall?
What to ask before approving the quote
Ask for the panel thickness and type, the area being replaced, and the finishing work included. If a specific brand matters to you, have it named in the quote.
For a small repair, a photo of the damage and a wider view of the wall help us understand the job. Send them to Smart Fix with a note about any leak and whether you have matching paint.
